Nassau County BOCC Proclaims October 4–10 as Fire Prevention Week
The Nassau County Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) has proclaimed October 4–10, 2026, as Fire Prevention Week in Nassau County, joining communities across the country in promoting fire safety and prevention.
This year’s Fire Prevention Week theme, “Charge into Fire Safety: Safe Charging Is a Superpower,” highlights an increasingly important fire safety issue in homes: the safe use and charging of lithium-ion batteries.
Lithium-ion batteries power many of the rechargeable devices residents use every day, including smartphones, tablets, laptops, power tools, e-bikes, e-scooters and toys. When these batteries are damaged, misused or improperly charged, they can overheat and potentially cause a fire or explosion.
In recognition of Fire Prevention Week, Nassau County Fire Rescue (NCFR) will visit schools throughout Nassau County during the month of October to provide fire safety education to more than 600 third grade students. As part of these visits, NCFR will feature its fire prevention trailer, an interactive educational tool that simulates real-life emergency situations and gives participants an opportunity to learn how to respond safely.
The BOCC’s proclamation encourages residents to make safe charging part of their everyday routines. Simple precautions can help reduce the risk of battery-related fires, including:
- Use the cord and charger that came with the device or one approved by the manufacturer.
- Charge devices on a hard, flat surface rather than on a bed, couch or other soft surface.
- Watch for warning signs, such as a device becoming unusually hot or beginning to swell.
- Unplug devices once they are fully charged.
- Charge larger devices, such as e-bikes and e-scooters, outside and away from exits.
Nassau County Fire Rescue remains committed to reducing fires through prevention, safety education and community outreach. Fire Prevention Week provides an opportunity for residents of all ages to review their home fire safety practices and learn how small, everyday decisions can help protect their families, homes and communities.
Charge into fire safety this October, and make safe charging a habit every time you plug in.
